Shopify freight rates calculated from your own rate cards
Example: a flat $15.00 ex GST shipping rate on a parcel that costs $38.50 ex GST to reach Cairns loses $23.50 ex GST. Eighty of those orders a month is $1,880.00 ex GST.
Shopify shipping profiles can only get so close to a carrier's zones, cubic rules and fuel levy. So most stores charge an average, and the far postcodes lose money.
Calculated rates fed to checkout
With live rates on, each carrier service Forensik can price appears at checkout as its own option, cheapest first. The price is the expected carrier cost from your approved rate card and fuel levy, plus your markup. Forensik does not call a carrier's API at checkout, so the price matches what it later checks the invoice against.
Forensik gives itself 2.5 seconds to price a cart. If it runs out of time or the cart cannot be priced, your fallback rate shows, or only your other shipping methods if you set none. Only Australian destinations get a Forensik rate.
Setup steps
- On Integrations in Forensik, find Shopify and select Connect. You need to be a Master Admin or Editor with a verified email.
- Enter your myshopify.com address, not your own domain, and approve the permissions on Shopify: read orders, read products, write shipping.
- Add your SKUs in Forensik with their cartons, using the same SKU codes as your Shopify products, and approve a rate card, a fuel levy and a markup rule.
- Under Live checkout rates, check the badge shows On, or select Turn on. If your plan includes live rates when you connect, Forensik turns them on for you. Then set a fallback rate and choose whether prices go to Shopify including GST, which is ticked by default.
What you need from Shopify
Your Shopify plan must allow carrier-calculated shipping. If it does not, Shopify refuses and Forensik shows what Shopify said. Live checkout rates are on Growth and above, and in the 14-day trial. On Starter, orders still come in and checkout uses your store's other shipping methods.
Store orders arrive without a connote. Forensik ties each carrier invoice line to its order by tracking number or order number where it has them. Any line it cannot tie waits on a review list for you to confirm, or for you to upload a list of orders and connotes.
Worked example, with example numbers
Example numbers: a Brisbane store ships a parcel to Cairns with a carrier cost of $38.50 ex GST, base and fuel, at a 25% markup.
Forensik's price is $48.13 ex GST, plus $4.81 ex GST of GST.
Checkout shows $52.94 inc GST, with Send prices including GST ticked.
Questions
- What happens to a product with no SKU or no cartons?
- Forensik does not guess. The cart cannot be priced, so your fallback rate shows, or only your other shipping methods when you have none.
- Will my other shipping methods keep working?
- Yes. Turning live rates off removes only Forensik's rates, and your other Shopify shipping methods carry on.
- Can I get my past orders?
- Sync asks Shopify for orders from the last 30 days and skips any Forensik already has. For older history, import an order file.
