How a fuel levy works

A fuel levy is a percentage a carrier adds on top of base freight to cover changing fuel costs. The rate changes from time to time, so the rate that counts is the one in force on the day the freight shipped.

What the percentage applies to matters as much as the percentage. Your agreement says whether the levy is charged on base freight only, or on some surcharges as well. Switch the option below to see the difference in dollars.

Worked example, with example numbers

Example numbers: base freight of $100.00, surcharges of $20.00 and an example levy of 15%.

Levy on base freight only: 15% of $100.00 = $15.00. The total is $135.00 ex GST, $13.50 GST and $148.50 inc GST.

Levy on surcharges as well: 15% of $120.00 = $18.00. The total is $138.00 ex GST, $13.80 GST and $151.80 inc GST.

Questions

What is a fuel levy?
A fuel levy is a charge a carrier adds on top of base freight to cover changing fuel costs. It is usually a percentage, and the carrier changes it from time to time.
Does the fuel levy apply to surcharges?
It depends on your agreement with the carrier. Some surcharges may carry the levy and others may not, so check your rate card or fuel notice. If only some of your surcharges carry it, enter those in the surcharges field and add the others to your total yourself.
Which levy rate should I use?
The one in force on the day the freight shipped, from your carrier's fuel notice or your agreement. An invoice worked out at an old rate is one reason it can cost more than it should.
How is GST worked out here?
This calculator adds GST at 10% to the whole total ex GST, levy included. Some freight, such as international freight, may be treated differently, so check your tax invoice or ask your accountant.
