Offer free freight

Switch on free freight for everything, a category or a single SKU. The customer pays $0 for that freight and Forensik records the carrier cost you absorb.

Free freight is a markup choice like any other. It never happens by accident: a 0% markup still charges the customer the carrier cost, while free freight charges nothing. You switch it on yourself, at the level you want.

Switch it on

  1. Go to Pricing (/freight-pricing). You need the Master Admin role.
  2. Choose the pencil beside the global markup, a category or a SKU.
  3. Choose Free freight.
  4. Set Effective from, or leave it blank for now. It cannot start in the past.
  5. Choose Save new version.

The same order of rules applies as for any markup: the SKU's own setting first, then its category, then global. So:

  • free freight on a SKU makes that SKU free wherever it goes;
  • free freight on a category makes every SKU in it free, unless a SKU has its own markup;
  • free freight on the global markup makes everything free, except SKUs and categories with their own markup.

SKU-level settings, including free freight on a single SKU, are on Growth and above. On Starter you can set free freight on the global markup or a category.

On Growth and above you can also set free freight for many SKUs at once: export the SKU markups, put true in the free_freight column and leave mode and percent blank, then import the file. See Set your markup rules.

What it records

For a free freight line, the customer price is $0 and no GST is charged on it. The carrier cost does not disappear: Forensik records it as absorbed, the freight you chose to give away. You see it:

  • on the Pricing page, as a Free freight badge;
  • in Which rule applies?, as an "Absorbed" amount in the worked price;
  • in Test a quote, as a Free freight badge and the amount absorbed under Show working;
  • on each consignment, as a Free freight badge against the order line.

The carrier still bills you for the freight, and the freight audit checks that bill against the rate card as usual.

Mixed orders

When an order mixes free freight SKUs with others, the consignment's cost is shared across the lines by rated weight. Only the free freight lines are $0; the other lines are priced at their own markup. See Mixed orders and allocation.

Switching it off

Choose the pencil again, pick a markup on cost and save a new version. Prices already posted keep the setting that was in force when they were priced.
